Workshop 1 - Human semen analysis
Dr. Joana Santiago & Prof. Erick da Silva
This practical workshop is designed for students, researchers, and healthcare professionals interested in learning how to perform basic human semen analysis according to the latest World Health Organisation guidelines. Participants will gain hands-on experience in the key steps of semen sample assessment, including basic laboratory procedures, evaluation of semen parameters, and interpretation of results within a standardised framework. The workshop aims to provide a solid introduction to semen analysis, combining theoretical background with practical training to support accurate, consistent, and clinically relevant laboratory practice.
This workshop is organized by the FERTI$CAN Project funded by FEDER and FCT (Project 16652; COMPETE2030-FEDER-00783300; https://doi.org/10.54499/2023.17577.ICDT; 2023.17577.ICDT)
Room 30B.3.27
Workshop 2 - Sperm metabolism and oxidative stress
Prof. Marco Alves and Prof. Pedro F. Oliveira
This workshop is designed for researchers, graduate students, and professionals interested in exploring the molecular mechanisms regulating male reproductive biology. Moving beyond classical semen analysis, the program bridges state-of-the-art laboratory methodologies with multi-omic data integration. Participants will explore cellular bioenergetics, the physiological and pathological roles of oxidative stress and mitochondrial function in spermatozoa, and the experimental designs required for advanced reproductive research. The workshop combines theoretical insights with practical approaches in metabolomics (such as 1H-NMR profiling and OROBOROS).
This workshop is organized under the scope of the SpermFit project, funded by FEDER and FCT (Project 16488; COMPETE2030-FEDER-00765900).
Room 30B.3.29
Workshop 3 -Techniques in Bovine Semen Preparation
Dr. Magda Henriques and Prof. Bruno Colaço
This practical workshop is designed for students, researchers, and professionals in veterinary medicine who are interested in understanding the key steps involved in bovine semen preparation. Participants will learn how bovine semen samples are collected, processed, and cryopreserved for later use in artificial insemination. The workshop offers a hands-on introduction to essential laboratory procedures and provides practical insight into semen handling, quality assessment, and preservation techniques used in veterinary reproductive practice.
This workshop is organized under the scope of the SpermXYSort project, funded by FCT (Project 17117, COMPETE2030-FEDER-00851600).
Room 30B.3.28
Please note that the Workshops are available for an additional fee of €40, which is not included in the registration price.
