Presentation Title
Ion channels in human sperm - a tale of unexplained male infertility and contraception
Thursday, April 29
9h00 – 9h35
Timo Strünker studied Biology and completed his PhD in Biochemistry. Afterwards, he worked as a group leader in ion channel-drug discovery, until he became the head of the 'Sperm Physiology' Group at the Research Center caesar in Bonn, Germany. In 2015, he was appointed as a Professor at the Centre of Reproductive Medicine and Andrology at the University of Münster, Germany. The research focus of his team is on signal transduction in sperm; particularly, on the ion channels, receptors, and cellular messengers that allow sperm to translate changes in their environment into behavioral responses. Moreover, they aim to elucidate the pathomechanisms underlying male infertility. Finally, the Strünker group also develops pharmacological tools to manipulate the sperm-specific ion channels CatSper and Slo3 and to explore these channels as targets for novel contraceptives.
